Teresa Nkesa Juma (TNJ) also known as Mama Cynthia lives in Enoosaen. It is a small village in Transmara district in Kenya. Mama Cynthia is one of the seamstresses in our Enkiteng Program in Enoosaen. She was the first one to join the program in summer 2012 as a trainer, teaching our other seamstresses how to sew Enkiteng bags (cloth gift wrapping bags) using donated fabric. She has also been making the Enkiteng bags as a way to provide a supplementary income, and is now making them out of Kitenge fabric, as well as new products such as Kitenge knapsacks.
“Before I joined the program, I used to be a house wife. I had a tailoring shop although I didn’t have much work to do. The program has changed my life because I am not now begging for money from my husband am able to buy food, clothes and pay school fees for my children. I plan on continuing sewing so as to get income and improve our lives.”
